Three Tips for Success at Seaside

Bailey Nelson and Natalie Ayhat, 2014 Seaside U14 Champions

Every year athletes from the Pacific Northwest have the ability to experience one of the most impressive spectacles in beach volleyball, the Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament.  With over 1,000 teams participating in all ages and skill levels, the Seaside Championship is one of the most sought after titles of the summer.  Here are three things that can help you and your partner have the best chances of succeeding in the World's biggest event.

1.  Focus on what you do well, and do it a lot.
There is little point during a big tournament focusing on things that are not going well.  You want to focus on the strengths of your team and find ways to do those things.  If you have a great cut shot, find ways to score points with it.  It you have a great float serve, use it.  Stay positive and build on your strengths all the way to a title.

2.  Figure Out What Makes Your Opponents Uncomfortable, and Make Them Do It
Talk to your partner often about what is working for you.  What can you do to keep your opponent out of system?  Where are they least comfortable?  How can you make them do things they are uncomfortable doing?  Answer these questions frequently through the course of a match and you will have a much higher chance of winning.

3.  Play to Win One Point at a Time
Make each point of the tournament its own contest.  Slow down your pace and keep your focus on the opportunity that is in front of you right now.  You can't win the next point if you are focused points you have already played, or on points that you haven't played yet.  Play right now and you will keep a level of focus that will bring you success.  Distractions will be limited, mistakes will be less important.  You will be more likely to win the next point and that is critical in a large tournament.
